Behind Genius Ventures, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm focused on AI-native companies, joined Carta to maximize investor returns and scale into institutional-grade partnerships. Founded in 2021, the firm has launched two funds—one at $5 million and one at $8.9 million—using Carta Fund Administration to standardize recordkeeping and reporting.
Carta’s simplified workflows let founder and general partner (GP) Paige Finn Doherty concentrate on strong investments and investor relations as she grows Behind Genius.
Carta provides transparency and value for Behind Genius
"When I was starting the firm, we needed a fund administration platform that provided great value to our investors,” says Doherty. “Carta’s former chief strategy officer is one of our first limited partners [LPs], so he showed us Fund Administration. It gives all of our partners transparency over the processes involved in our investing.”
Doherty also appreciates that Carta is centralized and automated. She’s used various tools in her career and wanted Behind Genius’ fund administration to be digital-native and connected as a reflection of the firm’s tech focus.
Carta’s value extends financially, too.
“We looked at competitors, but they were more expensive. It didn’t serve anyone for us to work with a firm that wanted to charge us a high percentage of our investable capital,” says Doherty.
Clear workflows simplify fund administration
As Behind Genius grows, running the firm has become more complex. Its first fund has 120 LPs and its second has 59, but the second fund is larger with higher investments from each partner. Behind Genius’ portfolio includes nearly 60 companies, challenging Doherty to stay agile and responsive as needs evolve.
Carta Fund Administration helps her stay on top of daily demands by streamlining processes.
“We run basically all of our processes on Carta. Information lives in the Fund Administration platform, so we can provide our documentation and get almost immediate statements of investments (SOIs) that let me track Behind Genius’ real-time performance,” says Doherty.
The platform’s simplicity supports Doherty’s efforts across all activities. Carta makes it easy to track signatures, wire details, and data room activity. When capital calls require high levels of coordination, Doherty can sidestep slow, error-prone manual work.
"The fundraising tools are amazing. I can go in any time to check if LPs have signed documents and updated wire information, so I can determine next steps," says Doherty. “I’m also excited about how Carta manages capital calls and distributions. Fund Administration facilitates all of it.”
Fund Administration streamlines growth for a solo GP
Overall, Carta makes growth more feasible for Behind Genius Ventures. The Fund Administration platform helps Doherty accomplish high volumes of taskwork, while Carta’s dedicated staff offer additional support during busy times.
“Some of the reasons we chose Carta include the people. The team has been great, helping us set up our first fund, giving us early access to new closing tools, and collaborating with our tax team to deliver K-1s early, all of which helped drive LP satisfaction. I got really good feedback because we offered such clean processes,” says Doherty.
“It would be very challenging to be a solo GP managing all of this work manually. Carta saves me an incredible amount of time and allows me to lead Behind Genius Ventures. That is its greatest value for me and our investors.”
